Type Locality and Naming
The naming section is the east 8600 section in the East open-cut mine, Fushun coal mine, Liaoning. Named by Hong Youchong in 1980.
Lithology and Thickness
Light brown and dark brown, medium- or thin-bedded, dense, hard mudstone, marlstone and oil shale. Generally 48–190 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in conformable contact with the underlying Eocene Guchengzi Fm.
Upper contact
It is in conformable contact with the overlying Eocene Xilutian Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is mainly distributed in the Fushun area, Liaoning.

Fossils
There are abundant fossil plants, mainly including Glyptostrobus europaeus, Metasequoia disticha, Comptonia anderssonii, Sequoia chinensis, Dryophyllum dewalquei and Lygodium kaulfussii; the fossil insects are Cecidomyia, Componotue etc. In addition, there are sporopollen and some fossil vertebrates such as fishes and turtles. According to an analysis of sporopollen, pollen of angiosperms accounts for 67–97%; the pollen content of gymnosperms increases to some extent; spores of pteridophytes are rare (about 0–3%), as is the case with the mid-upper Eocene in Japan and the Far East region of the former Soviet Union.

It is interpreted to organic matter rich lacustrine-swampy deposits.
